Who Owns Your Google Ads Account? If the Answer Is "My Agency", Read This

22 July 2026 · By Paizah

Ask a simple question about your business today: if you fired your marketing agency this afternoon, what would you still own tomorrow morning?

For a worrying number of businesses, the honest answer is: the domain name, and not much else. The Google Ads account, with years of performance history that makes every future rupee work harder? The agency’s. The Analytics property, with every visitor your website ever received? The agency’s. Sometimes even the Google Business Profile — your own listing on the map — lives inside an agency’s account you have no access to.

This is the quiet standard practice of much of the agency market, and it has a name in every other industry: a hostage situation.

What agency-owned accounts actually cost you

Your history is your asset. A Google Ads account is not a container; it is a learning system. Quality Scores, conversion history and bidding data accumulate over years, and they directly lower what you pay per click. Start a fresh account and you start the learning from zero — at your expense. When an agency owns the account, leaving the agency means leaving the asset.

Your data is your customers. Analytics history is the only honest record of what your marketing actually did. It cannot be exported meaningfully, and it cannot be backfilled. When the account holding it is not yours, your own past is behind someone else’s login.

Your listing is your storefront. A Google Business Profile held in an agency’s account can follow the agency out the door — and a duplicate listing created to replace it can get both suspended. Businesses have lost years of reviews this way.

Leverage flows the wrong way. Every renewal conversation happens in the shadow of what leaving would cost. That is not a service relationship; it is rent.

The five-minute check

You do not need a consultant to find out where you stand. Do this today:

  1. Google Ads: sign in at ads.google.com with your own email. If you cannot, or you only have “read” access someone granted you, you do not control your account. Inside, check Admin access: who holds Admin, and on whose payments profile does billing run?
  2. Analytics: at analytics.google.com, does your own email hold the Administrator role on the property — or does the agency’s?
  3. Search Console: are you listed as an Owner of your domain property, or just a user someone added?
  4. Business Profile: in Google Maps, does your listing say “You manage this Business Profile” when you are signed in as yourself?

If any answer made you uncomfortable, ask your agency one question in writing: “Please confirm the account is owned by our identity and transfer primary ownership to us.” A good agency answers with a checklist. A hostage-taker answers with reasons.

What a clean setup looks like

There is a simple, boring, correct architecture, and it costs nothing extra:

  • Every account is created under the business’s own identity — Ads, Analytics, Search Console, Tag Manager, Business Profile. All of it.
  • Billing runs on the business’s own card, on the business’s own payments profile, with invoices in the business’s name (and GST credit where it belongs).
  • The agency operates through one named staff identity added to each property with the access it needs — and that identity can be revoked in five minutes on the day you part ways.
  • Every change is logged with a date and a reason, so when results move, you can see why — and so the next operator, whoever it is, inherits a documented account instead of a mystery.

Offboarding under this architecture is a checklist. Nothing has to be handed back, because nothing was ever taken.

Why we publish this

This is exactly how Paizah runs its Google Ads & Search Management engagements, and we say it out loud in every pitch precisely because much of the market does the opposite. Client-owned accounts, one revocable operator identity, a dated ledger of every change. Our engagements start with a fixed-fee Takeover Audit that, among other things, tells you plainly who owns what today — including the uncomfortable parts.

You should own your accounts whether or not you ever work with us. If this article made you check, it did its job.
